Sometimes snoring can be a sign of a more severe health condition known as obstructive sleep apnea, where the airway closes itself off and you stop breathing until your body detects a lack of oxygen and you are awakened, gasping for air. If you stop breathing for more than 10 seconds, and do this 5 or more times per hour of sleep, then you have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea increases your risk of day-time sleepiness and is associated with car accidents as well as the risk of several dangerous health conditions such as diabetes, depression, heart attack, stroke, and weight problems. Unfortunately, the majority of people with sleep apnea remain undiagnosed and untreated.

If you feel you or someone you care about may be at risk of sleep apnea, please call our office for a sleep consultation. If you are at risk, the diagnoses can only be confirmed through a sleep study which can be completed at a local sleep center, or at home if you prefer. Once the diagnosis is made, we can help you make a plan to treat the condition so you can breathe and sleep through the night. Most cases of snoring and many cases of sleep apnea may be effectively treated through wearing an oral appliance. In the case of sleep apnea, this will often be covered by your medical insurance.
